Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean<br><br>CLKs' understanding and ability to tap into the benefits of relationships, as well as the learner-internal aspects, were crucial. For instance the RIs from TS and ZL both cited their local professor relationships as a major factor in their pragmatic choice to not criticize the strictness of a professor (see example 2).<br><br>This article reviews all local practical research on Korean up to 2020. It focuses on key pragmatic topics including:<br><br>Discourse Construction Tests (DCTs)<br><br>The discourse completion test (DCT) is an instrument that is widely used in pragmatic research. It has many strengths but it also has a few disadvantages. For example it is that the DCT is unable to account for cultural and personal differences in communicative behavior. Furthermore it is also the case that the DCT is prone to bias and may result in overgeneralizations. Therefore, it is important to analyze it carefully before it is used for research or assessment purposes.<br><br>Despite its limitations the DCT can be a useful tool to investigate the connection between prosody, information structure and non-native speakers. The ability of the DCT in two or more stages to influence social variables that affect politeness could be a benefit. This ability can aid researchers study the role of prosody in communication across cultural contexts, a key issue in cross-cultural pragmatics.<br><br>In the field linguistics, DCT is one of the most useful tools for analyzing communication behaviors of learners. It can be used to study various issues, including the manner of speaking, turn-taking and lexical choices. It can also be used to determine the phonological complexity of learners speaking.<br><br>Recent research utilized the DCT as tool to evaluate the skills of refusal among EFL students. Participants were presented with a range of scenarios to choose from, and then asked to choose the most appropriate response. The authors found the DCT to be more efficient than other methods of refusal like the use of a questionnaire or video recordings. Participants were 46 CLKs with upper-intermediate ability who provided responses to MQs and DCTs. They were also asked to provide reflections on their assessments and their refusals to participate in RIs. The RIs were conducted one-toone within two days after the participants had completed the MQs. The RIs, which were transcribed and recorded by two coders independent of each other, were then coded. The coding process was iterative and involved the coders reading and discussing each transcript. The results of the coding process were evaluated against the original RI transcripts, giving an indication of how well the RIs accurately portrayed the core behavior.<br><br>Interviews for refusal<br><br>The most important question in pragmatic research is: Why do some learners decide to not accept native-speaker norms? Recent research has attempted to answer this question with various experimental tools including DCTs MQs and RIs. The participants comprised 46 CLKs, 44 CNSs, and 45 KNSs from five Korean universities. They did this despite the fact that they were able to produce patterns that resembled natives. They were aware of their practical resistance. They attributed their resistance to learner-internal factors such as their personalities and multilingual identities. They also mentioned external factors such as relational affordances. For instance, they outlined how their relationships with professors facilitated an easier performance in relation to the linguistic and intercultural rules of their university.<br><br>However, the interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures and punishments they could be subject to if they violated the local social norms. They were concerned that their native interactants might consider them "foreigners" and believe they are incompetent. This is similar to that expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).<br><br>These findings suggest that native-speakers pragmatic norms aren't the default preference for Korean learners. They could still be a useful model for official Korean proficiency tests. Future researchers should reassess the usefulness of these tests in various cultural contexts and specific situations.
