Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos exposure in the workplace is the primary reason for mesothelioma. The exposure to asbestos can happen in construction, shipyards and factories.

Asbestos fibres inhaled get trapped in the lining (pleura) of the lungs. They cause gene mutations that result in cancer. The symptoms typically don't appear until 20 to 60 years after exposure.

Signs and symptoms

Mesothelioma symptoms vary depending on the type and the stage of cancer as well as the location where tumors develop in the body. Pleural mesothelioma lawyer can affect the lungs while peritoneal, pericardial, and mesothelioma of the peritoneal region affect the stomach and heart. Patients may be afflicted by symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, and difficulty breathing.

The first step in identifying mesothelioma is a physical examination and detailed health history. Patients should inform their doctor about any asbestos exposure or unusual signs or changes to the body that they have observed. In addition to conducting an examination of the body doctors may also order imaging tests to see how the disease is progressing and also to rule out other conditions such as pneumonia or lung cancer.

Mesothelioma is often not diagnosed until decades after exposure to asbestos. This is due to the fact that asbestos fibers can be breathed in or swallowed, and cling to the organs' linings, such as the lungs or stomach. As time passes, these fibers cause inflammation and eventually tumors. The symptoms of mesothelioma are usually not apparent. manifest until the cancer has spread to other parts of the.

Once mesothelioma symptoms begin they can quickly worsen and affect a patient's overall quality of life. As the cancer spreads patients may become weaker and bed-bound. This is why many patients with mesothelioma in the late stages suffer severe pain towards the end of their lives.

In the course of a physical exam, doctors will ask about a patient's asbestos exposure and mesothelioma-related risk factors. A family member who had mesothelioma, or any other type of cancer, smoking or military service can all increase a person's risk of developing the disease.

Patients with mesothelioma are often at a higher risk of developing other forms of cancer, including breast and lung cancers due to the fact that asbestos fibers can irritate the tissues of these patients as well. By avoiding asbestos exposure and maintaining a healthy hygiene at work, these risks can be minimized. Employees should shower and change their clothes immediately after leaving the office to avoid bringing asbestos-containing fibers home on their clothing or skin. In addition, those who live with workers who are exposed to asbestos should be certain to shower and change their own clothes before they enter the house.
