Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms can resemble those of other conditions and be mistaken for a hernia, gastrointestinal issues like colitis or Crohn's disease or other forms of abdominal cancer. Many patients do not report their asbestos exposure and don't seek medical attention. If mesothelioma has been identified doctors may recommend an examination for a more precise diagnosis. A biopsy involves the removal of tiny pieces of tissue to be examined. This test will reveal if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), the sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has reached an early stage doctors can remove all of the tumors and offer an effective treatment. The specialist can also determine whether the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient, including paracentesis, which drains the fluid from the abdomen.

When a mesothelioma is advanced, the prognosis becomes poorer. The tumors may become resistant to certain treatment and recur. The doctor might suggest a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy alone to improve the prognosis of patients.
