Upgrades will give you a boosts in certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. Each upgrade also boosts an unspecified substat.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless the item has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like Eth Titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the need to roll to get a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by transferring the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. However, the item that is used for the upgrade will be consumed for the duration of time and can't be used again. Upgrades can be used to create enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear up-to-date it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the item level, but they will always be cheaper than buying new equipment. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest piece to ilvl 385 will cost 20 recycle points, while purchasing the same item from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to purchase tools, armor, weapon and accessory upgrades. Players can purchase them from NPCs of item upgraders for a variety of currencies. They can also find them on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any tool, weapon, or armor. The button will display a preview of an item level upgrade's next upgrade level, if there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the item upgrade slot and current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers for instance. Each step costs 15 Flightstones plus a certain number of crests. Some upgrades offer a discount on the Flightstones. After an item has been upgraded to a certain degree and is degraded, it can be sold and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currency types.

Many locations offer item upgraders, including the main Island and some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon as well as the possibility of obtaining the latest recipe. The discount on upgrades increases when more items are upgraded. It can be increased by having players complete certain achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are available only through a variety means. This is both a benefit and a drawback.

In Season 3, a number of new features were added to the upgrade system. After a player has earned an upgrade to a particular level for an Best item upgrade in an armor slot, upgrading additional items to the same level will be less expensive, even if they are part of an entirely different set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones required to upgrade is reduced and the discount is available across all accounts. In the same way, the amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is also reduced and is not available until players have reached certain milestones in their achievement.

Crests

When it comes to upgrading gear in WoW players have a variety of options. Flightstones are a currency that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more special and are used for specific item level upgrades. Crests are the main component of the Dragonflight gear progression system, which was introduced in 10.1 and are available in four ranks.

The first thing to note is that crests are only able to be used to purchase gear of a specific rank, and every rank has different requirements for upgrading. The most basic and straightforward upgrade process costs just 15 crests while the more complex one can require as much as 20 crests based on the kind of gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through finishing content at the appropriate level. This could mean doing outdoor activities or completing dungeons and raids in all difficulty levels to obtain equipment of lower tier or Mythic+ raid bosses or dungeons that have a high difficulty for gear in the endgame. The crests can then be exchanged with an upgrader like Cuzolth or Vaskarn, in Valdrakken to upgrade the item in the proper steps and paths.

The new currency system isn't difficult to use, however it will bring some changes to the process of upgrading. For instance, when an Item Level Upgrade reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't need Flightstones to be upgraded. This change allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible level for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another important change is that crests have one purpose and it's crucial to use them wisely. For instance, it's a good idea use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the top equipment you have, and then save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you're planning to make. This is especially true for items like trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character which will only be able to benefit from the discount for all accounts when all of the slots are filled with high-quality equipment.
