The sole known cause of mesothelioma peritoneal is exposure to asbestos case. Asbestos fibers can cause irritation to abdominal tissues as well as cell changes when inhaled or consumed. In time, this may result in tumors that develop into a mesothelioma of the peritoneum.

Manufacturing or construction work is often the first location where asbestos exposure starts. These industries could use materials that contain asbestos, such as insulation and fireproofing. Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms could appear similar to other diseases and could be mistaken for hernias, digestive problems such as colitis or Crohn's disease or other types of abdominal cancer. Many patients do not disclose their asbestos exposure, and don't seek medical attention. A biopsy may be recommended by a specialist to confirm the diagnosis of mesothelioma. A biopsy is the removal tiny pieces of tissue to be tested. This procedure can reveal whether the mesothelioma has epithelioid (epidermoid), sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has not spread and the doctors are able to remove the tumors. They will also provide a curative treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine if the cancer has spread within the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatments for the patient, for example paracentesis that drains fluid from the abdomen.

If mesothelioma progresses, the prognosis becomes poorer. The tumors may become resistant to treatment and then recur. The doctor might recommend the combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the prognosis for a patient.
