A biopsy is the removal of tiny pieces of tissue that is examined. This procedure can reveal whether the mesothelioma has epithelioid (epidermoid), sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If the mesothelioma is at an early stage doctors can remove all of the tumors and provide the best treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient, for example paracentesis, which drains the fluid from the abdomen.

When a mesothelioma is advanced, the prognosis becomes poorer. This is because the cancer may become resistant to certain treatments and can recur. The doctor may recommend a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction, which is hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemo. This combination is more likely to improve the prognosis of a patient than chemotherapy on its own.
