Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms may be similar to those of other conditions and be mistaken for hernias, gastrointestinal issues like colitis or Crohn's disease, or other forms of abdominal cancer. A lot of patients do not disclose their asbestos exposure, and do not seek medical care. When mesothelioma is detected experts may suggest a biopsy for a more precise diagnosis. A biopsy involves removing a small portion of the affected tissue for testing. This procedure can reveal whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), the sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has not spread and the doctors are able to remove the tumors. They can also provide an option for curative treatment. The specialist can also determine whether the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative treatments for the patient, for example paracentesis to drain the fluid from the abdomen.

If mesothelioma progresses the chances of survival are less. The tumors could become resistant to certain treatment and recur. The doctor might recommend an amalgamation of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the prognosis of a patient.
