This procedure can reveal if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid) or the sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If the mesothelioma is at an early stage, doctors can remove all the tumors and offer curative treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has spread within the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient, including paracentesis, which drains the fluid from the abdomen.

The outlook for patients is worse when mesothelioma is advanced. The tumors may become resistant to treatment and recur. The doctor may recommend a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's outlook than merely chemotherapy alone.
