A biopsy is the process of removing just a small portion of affected tissue for testing. This test will reveal if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If the mesothelioma is at an early stage doctors can remove all of the tumors and offer the best treatment. The specialist can also determine if the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative care for the patient. For example, paracentesis to drain fluid from the abdomen.

The outlook for patients is worse when mesothelioma is advanced. This is because the cancer may become resistant to certain treatments, and they may develop a recurrence. The doctor may recommend a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Options for surgery include cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve the prognosis of a patient than merely chemotherapy alone.
