Item upgrading allows players to enhance their weapons and equipment with new affixes that boost the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Items with weak bases, such as rings can be upgraded to a stronger base. Items with strong bases, such as the Titans of eth have little changes in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components are items that can be incorporated into weapons, armor, trinkets and gathering tools, giving an attribute bonus or extra effect when the equipment is used. They can be bought from vendors, found in loot, dropped by enemies or as a reward from missions or chests. Some upgrades can have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be above a certain point before they can be upgraded.

In order to upgrade an item of armor, the user must choose it and click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. The screen will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview that shows the expected upgrade stats as well as the required component or materials.

There are three types: universal upgrades (which include gems), prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, like gems, are able to be used on any kind of equipment. They offer a lesser bonus than upgrade components that have a specific type limitation. Infusions are gems that are only available in equipment that is legendary or ascended. Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system differs from previous versions in several important ways. Gear is now divided into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a certain number of times before they are "leveled out." The upgrade costs increase with each level, but the materials needed do not. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a specific few items and maximize the effect of those items rather than spreading the cost of upgrades across several pieces.

Once an item upgrader has been leveled out, it will be eligible for an upgrade set of components, as well as an increase in the probability that the upgrade will succeed. This bonus is called the Artisan’s Energy and it resets to 0 if an upgrade fails or increases if the upgrade succeeds.
