A biopsy involves the removal of just a small portion of affected tissue to test. This test will reveal whether the mesothelioma has epithelioid (epidermoid), the sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has not spread, doctors can remove the tumors. They will also offer a curative treatment. The specialist can also determine whether the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatment for the patient, including paracentesis that drains abdominal fluid.

When a mesothelioma is advanced, the prognosis becomes poorer. The cancers can become resistant to treatment and then recur. The doctor might recommend an amalgamation of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction, which is hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the prognosis for the patient.
