If the mesothelioma is at an early stage doctors can remove all of the tumors and offer curative treatment. The doctor can also determine if the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatments for the patient, such as paracentesis that drains abdominal fluid.

The outlook for patients is worse when a mesothelioma has advanced. The tumors could become resistant to certain treatment and then recur. The doctor may suggest the combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the prognosis of patients.
