The performance of many Path of Exile items can be enhanced by upgrading their performance. They can cause additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Rare-grade equipment is usually superior to the more modernized Common or Magic gear due to their high demands.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a type of upgrade that can be applied to weapons and armor items. They improve the stats of the item that they're attached to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of games and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. They can also be salvaged by using an expert or higher salvage kit to salvage upgrade components from other items.

The amount of damage that an armored item or weapon can absorb depends on the degree of upgrades. A piece of armor upgraded to the highest upgrade level will boost its ability to absorb damage. However, it's important be aware that this upgrade will increase its weight, which will cause it to weigh more than it was before.

There are a few different kinds of armor upgrades that are available in the game and they all have different effects. Some upgrades give armor an extra amount of health points while others make it lighter and more powerful. The kind of armor upgrade an item upgrader can receive will be identified by the name of the upgrade as shown in the table below.

Some of the upgrades also require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, which are identified by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. Weapons

All kinds of jewels are crafted at the Jeweler however, there are some exceptions to this, such as the rare and legendary jewels which require you to be at a high enough level to be able to get them. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels are able to be swapped by a different jewel of the same kind without damaging the original one. However it is only possible to replace one jewel in a piece of equipment only once.

Utilizing more jewels in a movement will make it feel smoother, and is often used for aesthetic reasons. Apart from improving performance, the jewels create a surface that is harder than metal, which means that repeated friction from pivots won't damage them as easily.

A Glyphmaster can offer glyphs to improve the appearance of your weapons and shields. These glyphs provide a small boost and can be freely swapped, but they are not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs, like jewelry, can be upgraded at the Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Crystals and gold. Glyphs can also be removed, which returns them to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits or aegis can't be swapped, and can only be recovered by using an Upgrade extractor, or salvaging with a Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage.

Trinkets

Trinkets can give your character many small, but useful benefits. They can be obtained in the beginning areas as loot, personal story rewards, from vendors, or by completing road interactions. They may also be crafted by jewelers and later found or purchased on the Trading Post.

The first trinkets that a player can unlock is the cloak, which gives a small but useful bonus in speed of movement and evasion. The player can then collect necklaces, amulets, and rings, in a similar way to how they acquired weapons and armor. Each piece of gear comes with one upgrade slot that can accommodate either a universal upgrade or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be used on any equipment. Jewels cannot be upgraded or replaced, and can only be used with certain trinkets.

These trinkets can also grant buffs and skills that remain active when the hero is not fighting. This allows a hero to be more efficient when they are not active. It also helps compensate for the lack of a strong slots in the team or talent tree which would normally be filled by the hero's Best item upgrade stats.

As a rule, trinket upgrades should prioritize BiS (Best in Slot) items you won't replace soon. Next, any items with desirable statistics that aren't as significant as the iLevel of the item to be upgraded.
