A biopsy is the process of removing just a small portion of affected tissue for testing. This test will reveal whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid) or sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma does not have spread it is possible to remove the tumors. They can also provide an effective treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine if the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatment for the patient, including paracentesis to drain the abdominal fluid.

If mesothelioma progresses and the prognosis is less favorable, it becomes more difficult to treat. The cancers can become resistant to certain treatment and may recur. The doctor might suggest a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. The surgical options include cytoreduction surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve the prognosis of a patient than chemotherapy alone.
