It may get stuck on power cords and socks, and may have trouble navigating between surfaces, such as hardwood and rug.

iRobot recommends that you tidy up the area where the i3+ EVO vacuums before using it. This includes putting away any toys or clutter it may encounter. It's also an excellent idea to keep the bin and filter clear so they don't become clogged with dirt. When the i3+ EVO's internal bin is filled or the battery is empty it will return to its docking station, automatically emptying its dirt into the station's dust bin and then resumes cleaning the area where it left off. Battery life is about an hour and a half of continuous usage. It takes three hours to charge.

2. IRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the most powerful model of the flagship line from iRobot, and it has the most up-to-date features. It's self-charging, self-navigating and the most important feature of all -- it comes with a self-emptying dustbin that eliminates one of the main sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.

The Roomba i7+ is able to remember up to 10 floor plans and their names using Imprint Smart Mapping, a system that lets it map rooms so it can clean them more efficiently. It also integrates with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning jobs and control your robot using voice or via the app.

In our testing the i7+ performed quicker and more maneuverable than our top choice which was the eufy RoboVac G30, and it took large pieces of pet hair from all surfaces kinds, including carpeting. Its greatest advantage over the Eufy is the self-emptying bin, which removes major maintenance sources and reduces recurring cost.

We were also amazed by the i7+'s integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services that we used to instruct the robot to start, stop or pause its cleaning routines and move around the room and sweep a specific space. Connecting the i7+ to these services was easy and straightforward using the iRobot Home app. Once connected we were able to give the i7+ voice commands, such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world filled with vacuums with cords that are like minivans and buses, this small Dyson model feels like an old-fashioned sports car. It is powerful enough to replace a traditional stand-up vacuum in most homes, yet it is also small enough to fit on a bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell high-energy lithium-ion battery that can provide energy that is not faded for 60 minutes. The sophisticated whole-machine filter system captures allergens, and then releases cleaner air into your home. Its specialized cleaning head drives bristles of nylon that are stiff and deep into carpet to collect large particles and fine dust. It has three different suction modes that can be adapted to the specific task. It is able to quickly change from floor vacuum to handheld vacuum, and vice versa.

The model comes with a dock that can charge the Dyson to 100 percent in 3.5 hours. It also provides the ability to connect two attachments and a handheld. This is a big improvement over the older Dysons models, that require a long charge and are a pain to store.

The main drawback of the V10 is its sluggish run time. Its claims on the market that it can provide up to 60 minutes of run time are a bit misleading as CR's tests have shown. This is an average, not an exceptional, run time for a battery-powered cordless vac. It's enough time to sweep a typical-sized home but not enough to reach every spot. (A second run is usually sufficient). This model has its own advantages however: it's lighter and more maneuverable than earlier Dysons cordless models, and its vacuuming ability is noticeable superior on low-pile floor carpet.

4. iRobot Roomba 694"

One of iRobot's most popular robot vacuums the 694 is a basic model that's a great choice for people who don't wish to spend too much money on a robot. It was able to remove the majority of types of debris in our tests, and frequently went over the same area multiple times for a thorough clean. Its flat front end helps to get into corners and along the edges of walls and walls, which is a nice touch.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt technology to stay clear of obstacles and help you navigate your home. It's not equipped with the capabilities for mapping of more advanced models, including our top picks, i3+EVO and j7+ Series. It is prone to getting stuck on phone cords or furniture and often runs out of power before returning to its base.

The app provides plenty of options to customize your robotic cleaner, including virtual barriers mopping water levels, behavior modification, docking frequency settings, and more. It's easy to understand and easy to use, just as is the case with other Samsung devices.

In our tests of the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors, and also handled dog hair (on carpet) quite well, cleaning up 86% of it. However, it wasn't particularly well in avoiding larger objects, like cords and socks which was disappointing. It's also a little more expensive than some of the other models we've tested which could be a deal-breaker for some buyers.

The app lets you customize the LED lights on the top of the vacuum so that you can determine where it is focused or if it has gotten stuck.

The app also makes it easy to manually steer the robot if needed. For instance, my living room rug has a darkly colored border that has a tendency to make it difficult for other robots I've tried. The HRV 425BL however was able to continue to move across the border without registering the cliff. The ability to program a weekly cleaning schedule for each week is a time-saving advantage.
