Asbestos exposure is the sole known cause of peritoneal mesothelioma. When asbestos fibers are breathed in or consumed, they may cause irritation to the tissues of the abdomen and cause cells to mutate. This can cause tumors to develop into mesothelioma in the peritoneum in time.

Exposure to asbestos often begins with work in construction or manufacturing. These industries can use asbestos-containing materials including fireproofing, insulation. Asbestos can also be present in household items, such as roofing tiles and flooring. Even the smallest amounts of exposure can put a person at risk for mesothelioma. Because of the lengthy latency period of the disease patients may be diagnosed with peritoneal msothelioma many decades after their first exposure.

Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms can be similar to those of other diseases and could be mistaken for hernias, digestive problems such as Crohn's disease or colitis, or other types of abdominal cancer. Many patients do not declare their asbestos exposure and do not seek medical attention. If mesothelioma is found doctors may recommend the procedure of a biopsy to make an accurate diagnosis. A biopsy is the process of removing just a small portion of affected tissue for testing. This test will reveal whether the mesothelioma has epithelioid (epidermoid), sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If the mesothelioma is at an early stage doctors can remove all the tumors and offer an effective treatment. The doctor can also determine whether the cancer has spread inside the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatments for the patient, for example paracentesis that drains fluid from the abdomen.

The odds of survival are worse when mesothelioma is advanced. This is because the cancer can become resistant to certain treatments and can be recurred. The doctor might recommend the combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy alone to improve the outlook of the patient.
