A lot of patients do not declare their asbestos exposure and don't seek medical attention. If mesothelioma has been identified doctors may recommend an examination for a more accurate diagnosis. A biopsy involves removing a small portion of the affected tissue for testing. This test can determine if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma isn't spreading and the doctors are able to remove the tumors. They will also offer a curative treatment. The doctor can also determine whether the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative care for the patient, such as paracentesis, which drains the fluid from the abdomen.

The prognosis is worsened when a mesothelioma has progressed. The reason for this is that the tumors can become resistant to certain treatments and may develop a recurrence. The doctor may recommend a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Options for surgery include cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy alone to improve the prognosis for patients.
