Upgrades can boost the value of armors, weapons and rings. They also boost extra bonuses such as crit chance and PvE damage.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into weapons, armor, and trinkets to give an additional stat boost or effect when they're used. These can be obtained through crafting, purchasing from vendors trading or looting. Certain upgrades have unique cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be used on equipment that has a slot. The item must be upgraded to a blue level before a component can be used. Unlike other mods, upgrade components can only be used one time; they can't be used multiple times or replaced by new upgrades. Infusions and Enrichments are a kind of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascending equipment, as other items that are not ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be retrieved by salvaging gear that is ascended or completing an elite task in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade could have a prefix or suffix, modifying the name of the equipment with the upgrade (for instance 'Canthan Armor Insignia" becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase the Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players create stronger versions of the equipment that require fewer upgrade items Crystals than would be required to reach the same upgrade level through normal methods.

A 'boost' upgrade can change the attack or defence characteristics of the weapon or armor. Each Glyph has a specific range of values that it can improve a stat by, and the value is displayed when you select the Glyph in your inventory. You can replace it with a different Glyph with the same rank or a higher rank, which will increase the overall value of the Glyph.

Glyphs can be found in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of an Gem Store bundle or purchase them with certain tools that are unlimited in use, and during Faction Crypt Raids. Each item level requires different components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.

Certain upgrades require a specific ingredient to activate. This ingredient can be obtained by completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or found on the upgrade tab in the crafting table. Each completed Upgrade Recipe earns a number of Technology Points. These points can be used to leveling up an item. Once enough points are earned you will be able to claim your upgrade and get its extra bonuses.

When the player upgrade a piece of equipment it will be replaced by an item that is new. This means that the same armor piece will become the form of a shield or weapon when upgraded. The new item also has its own set of bonuses. This could be a disadvantage since the item may become more expensive even if you do not require it.

Item upgrades can sometimes be rerolled if the player has enough reroll tokens to do so. Whenever an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied from lowest to highest. This means that if a weapon gains a crit chance increase it will be applied before any damage from attacks increases. The amount of resources required to upgrade an item is based on the rarity rating and the number of upgrade slots.
