The most common type of cancer is mesothelioma pleural. It affects the linings of the lung and is usually found in the chest. The symptoms include coughing up blood or fluid buildup around the lungs. It can also affect the stomach's lining (peritoneal pericardial) or the heart.

A person's chances of developing mesothelioma are affected by many factors which include the duration they were exposed to asbestos as well as their gender. Men are more likely to contract this disease than women, and the person's age is another factor. Family history is also a risk factor, as some asbestos-related illnesses have been linked to certain genes. People who have had radiation to the chest are also more likely to develop mesothelioma. The same is true for those with a family member suffering from this disease. Most mesothelioma sufferers are older than 60 years old.
