They found that 14 of these trials scored as highly or pragmatic practical (i.e. scores of 5 or more) in one or more of these domains, and that the majority were single-center.

Trials that have a high pragmatism score tend to have more expansive eligibility criteria than traditional RCTs which have very specific criteria that aren't likely to be used in clinical practice, and they contain patients from a broad variety of hospitals. The authors suggest that these characteristics could make pragmatic trials more effective and relevant to everyday clinical practice, however they do not guarantee that a trial conducted in a pragmatic manner is free of bias. The pragmatism principle is not a definite characteristic and a test that does not possess all the characteristics of an explanatory study can still produce reliable and beneficial results.
