A biopsy is the process of removing only a small amount of affected tissue for testing. This procedure will reveal the stage of mesothelioma and if it is epithelioid, biphasic or sarcomatoid.

If mesothelioma has not spread it is possible to remove the tumors. They will also provide an option for curative treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatments for the patient, for example paracentesis that drains fluid from the abdomen.

If mesothelioma progresses and the prognosis is less favorable, it becomes more difficult to treat. This is because the cancer can become resistant to certain treatments, and they may be recurred. The doctor may recommend a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemo. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's outlook than merely chemotherapy alone.
