A biopsy involves the removal of tiny pieces of tissue that is examined. This test can determine if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid) or the sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If the mesothelioma is at an early stage, doctors can remove all of the tumors and offer curative treatment. The doctor can also determine whether the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatments for the patient, for example paracentesis to drain the fluid from the abdomen.

If a mesothelioma has advanced the chances of survival are less. This is because the tumors are able to become resistant to certain treatments and can be recurred. The specialist may recommend the combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's prognosis than chemotherapy alone.
