If mesothelioma has been identified doctors may recommend a biopsy for a more precise diagnosis. A biopsy is the removal tiny pieces of tissue that is examined. This procedure can reveal whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid) or Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has not spread, doctors can remove the tumors. They can also provide a curative treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatment for the patient, including paracentesis, which drains the fluid from the abdomen.

When a mesothelioma is advanced, the prognosis becomes poorer. The tumors could become resistant to certain treatments and recur. The doctor might suggest a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction, which is hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the prognosis for the patient.
