A biopsy is the removal the smallest piece of tissue to be tested. This test will reveal whether the mesothelioma has epithelioid (epidermoid) or the sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma does not have spread it is possible to remove the tumors. They can also provide a curative treatment. The doctor can also determine whether the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient, for example paracentesis to drain the abdominal fluid.

The outlook for patients is worse when a mesothelioma has advanced. This is because the tumors can become resistant to certain treatments and may be recurred. The doctor may suggest an amalgamation of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the prognosis for the patient.
