Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade you choose, it can increase the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level and increase other stats.

The process of upgrading gear in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a specific amount.

Item Level

The value of an item upgrade's basic stats increases as it is upgraded. This value is the sum of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). The cost of upgrading items can be high depending on the upgrader you choose and the kind of upgrade you decide to do. This is due to the number of perks that must be modified to upgrade an item.

It is also used as a gating requirement when waiting for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It can also be used to determine a gating condition when queueing for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear that a player can wear (since PvP is capped at the lower levels). The average item level is listed on the character sheet.

Utilizing the level of an item can help players compare the strength of equipment when they decide to buy or sell. It's an indicator of the damage and its quality. The level of an item can be used to compare items when looking at a vendor's inventory.

All affixes can be currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade window pressing the green button. This will cost a specific amount in gold and items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges similar to other methods of rerolling.

Players can choose to upgrade an item to a specific stat, or reroll affixes. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However every item will include at least one stat in the range, unless they are an item that is unique or a God Roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could change is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to reroll the attaches, or select which stats to boost. Like base equipment, it will have to be done per item upgrader mod, and the item comparison interface wouldn't display all possible stats at once.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player increases the chance of finding items, the properties that are created by loot and the intensity of these properties. However, it doesn't directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It provides players with the chance to upgrade equipment earlier in the game. This is more beneficial in early game runs since players tend to prioritize the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.

Luck can also increase the likelihood of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading, which increases with each item level and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor, and weapons have the default Luck value of 40. These items can then be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to give +40 Luck or to boost the existing Luck of an item up to 140.

Furthermore some items, such as the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow, can be equipped to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items are available in the shops or made by using the appropriate ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to increase the success rate of an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their item if it is not successful.

The success rate of an upgrade is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of completing the upgrade successfully, and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The chance of success can only be increased so high, and the probability that an upgrade will fail can't exceed 100%..

The luck of an item can also influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. All items have an overall success rate of 25 percent and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the inventory items, so enchantment glint and other effects could be obstructed by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
