A biopsy involves the removal of a small portion of the affected tissue for testing. This test will reveal if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid) or Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma isn't spreading it is possible to remove the tumors. They can also provide an option for curative treatment. The doctor can also determine whether the cancer has spread inside the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatment for the patient. For example, paracentesis to drain fluid from the abdomen.

The outlook for patients is worse when mesothelioma is advanced. The reason for this is that the tumors can become resistant to certain treatments, and they may be recurred. The doctor might suggest a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's prognosis than merely chemotherapy alone.
