In September 2012, Consumer Reports called on manufacturers to make the pods safer by switching their transparent containers to opaque ones, and adding child-resistant latches. Several manufacturers responded and some added additional safety warnings.

In the meantime, to avoid any problems, keep the pods out of the reach of seniors and children and away from pets. Store them high or secure them to stop children from mistakenly identifying the pods as candy. Also, ensure that you make use of a detergent that is compatible with the type of washer. Be aware that water that is cold, especially if it is below 60 degrees Fahrenheit can not dissolve the pods and cause your machine to clog or leave a residue on your clothing.
