The findings of the MQs and DCTs were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and z-tests. The coding results were then compared to the original RI transcripts, giving an indication of how well the RIs accurately portrayed the core behavior.
Refusal Interviews (RIs)
A key question of pragmatic research is the reason why learners are hesitant to adhere to pragmatic norms that native speakers use. Recent research has attempted to answer this question by using several experimental tools including DCTs MQs and RIs. Participants comprised 46 CLKs and 44 CNSs from five Korean Universities. They were asked to perform the DCTs in their first language and complete the MQs in either their L1 or their L2. The results showed that CLKs on average, did not conform to the pragmatic norms of native speakers in more than 40 percent of their responses. They attributed their actions to learner-internal factors like their personalities and multilingual identities as well as ongoing life experiences. They also discussed, for instance how their relations with their professors enabled them to perform better in terms of the cultural and linguistic expectations of their university.
The interviewees expressed their concern about the social pressures and penalties they could face if their local social norms were violated. These results suggest that native-speaker practical norms are not the default preference of Korean learners. They may remain useful as a model for official Korean proficiency tests.
