WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade increases item level by +3. A random substat is also added to each upgrade.

The upgraded gear is usually more valuable, unless the item level upgrade has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like the eth Titan weapons). These types of gear get less value from upgrading due to the need to roll for a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and can't be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enchantments.

You can upgrade your equipment at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear current, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every several weeks.

Upgrades can cost more based on the level of the item however they'll always be less expensive than purchasing new equipment. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points, while buying a similar item from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade weapon, armor, tool and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players through item upgrader NPCs in exchange for a variety of currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade is purchased, it can be applied to any weapon or tool using the help of button, which will display a preview of the item at the next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the item upgrades slot and the current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers for example. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with certain upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of Flightstones or the crests used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower cost.

Item upgraders can be found in many places including the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount and the chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases depending on the amount of items being upgraded. It is also possible to be increased by requiring players to complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at the beginning, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades must be acquired through various methods that are both an improvement but also a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system was altered a bit, with some new features added. After a player has earned an upgrade to a specific item level for a particular armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level will cost less even when they are part of another set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones needed to upgrade is reduced and the discount is affixed to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed to upgrade items is cut as well, but is only available when certain milestones are reached.

Crests

When upgrading gear in WoW, players have a few choices. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone for upgrading. Crests are more special and are used for specific upgrades to the level of an Item Upgrader Kit. Crests are a crucial element of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System that was introduced in version 10.1. They come in four ranks.

The first thing to note is that crests are only able to be used to purchase equipment of a particular rank, and each rank has its own requirements for upgrading. The simplest and simplest upgrade items route costs 15 crests while the more complex one can require as much as 20 crests depending on the kind of gear being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by completing content of the appropriate level, whether that means walking around and doing outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, raids or dungeons of all difficulty for items of higher tier, or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses to obtain endgame gear. The crests can later be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC, such as Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade routes and steps.

The new currency system isn't too difficult to use, however it will bring some changes to the process of upgrading. When a piece attains the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it no longer requires Flightstones. This change allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another notable modification is that crests have one purpose and it's crucial to use them properly. It's best to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the highest-quality gear you can locate and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests to be used for the next set of upgrades. This is particularly true for items like rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character which can only be eligible to benefit from the discount for all accounts when all slots are filled with top-quality gear.
