Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades can also boost bonuses like Crit chance and damage from PvE.

Components

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment that has a slot to accommodate them; the item must have been at the very least upgraded to blue level for a component to be inserted. Infusions and enrichments are a type of upgrade items component that is used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and Ascended equipment, as well other items that are not ascended. When a player improves the equipment they have, the base item is replaced by the new item. The same armor will receive the form of a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item will have its own set bonus. This could be a drawback since the item may become more expensive even if you do not require it.

If the player has enough tokens they can roll item upgrades. The item will be replaced with a brand new one that has a base of level 1 and totally different bonuses. This can be useful, but should not be repeated often since it can waste resources.

Some upgrades can be rerolled multiple times which increases their value and giving players the ability to alter their equipment. The player can continue to use their weapon or armor even after the failure.

When an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied from lowest to highest. This means that if a weapon gains a crit chance increase that it will be applied prior to any damage to attack increases. A new attribute known as Slots is now added to the definition of the item and the value is recomputed each time an upgrade is made.

The amount of resources required to upgrade an item is based on the rarity rating as well as the number of upgrade slots.
