WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boost to certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. A random substat is also increased with every upgrade.

Upgraded gear generally sees greater value for trade as long as it meets low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or has a high stat variance (like eth titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as important for those with lower requirements due to the need to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by offering the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and can't be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enchantments.

You can upgrade items your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To ensure that your equipment is up-to-date it is recommended you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks.

The cost of upgrading will vary based on the current item level of the equipment being upgraded but they will always be cheaper than purchasing new gear from other sources. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest up to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. A similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are useful items which can be used to improve the quality of weapons, tools, armor, and other accessories. Players can purchase them from NPCs of item upgraders in a variety of currencies. They are also available on random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased it can be used on any weapon, tool, or armor using a button, which displays a preview of the item at the next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the item slot and the current level of the item, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for instance. Each upgrade item costs 15 Flightstones plus a certain number of crests. Certain upgrades provide a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item is upgraded to a certain level it can be re-downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower cost.

Many locations have upgraders for their items which include the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon as well as the possibility of getting a new recipe. The discount on upgrades increases according to the number of items that are being upgraded. It is also possible to be boosted by having players complete specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at beginning, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades are acquired via several methods which is both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3, several new features have been added to the upgrade system. After an upgrade has been completed to a certain item level for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level, will cost less. This applies even if the items are from another set of equipment.

The amount of Valorstones needed to upgrade is reduced and the discount is account-wide. Similarly, the amount of Harbinger Crests required for upgrades is also reduced and is not available until players have reached certain milestones in their achievements.

Crests

Players have a variety of options for upgrading their equipment in WoW. Flightstones are an option that is accessible to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more specific, and are used during specific item level upgrades. Crests are the main component of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1 and are available in four ranks.

First, you must be aware that the crests can only be purchased for equipment of a certain rank. Each rank has distinct upgrade item paths. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade costs 15 crests. The most complicated upgrade can require up to 20 crests, depending on the type or equipment being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by working through content that is of the appropriate level, which involves walking around and engaging in outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons with all difficulties for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons for gear that is used in the endgame. These crests can be exchanged with an upgrader for the item level Upgrade such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn, in Valdrakken to upgrade the item in the proper steps and pathways.

Using these new currencies isn't too difficult, but the system introduces some modifications to the upgrade process. When a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrade items for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it no longer requires Flightstones. This change is intended to allow players to upgrade their gear up to the highest ilvl possible on all their characters instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

Another notable modification is that crests have one usage, so it's important to make use of them in a responsible manner. For instance it's a good idea use all of your Whelpling-rank crests with the Best item upgrader gear you have available and keep Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you're planning to make. This is particularly true for items like rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character that will be able to take advantage of the account-wide discount when all slots are filled with top-quality gear.
