A Good Rant About Double Pushchair
Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?
A lightweight double to single buggy pushchair makes it easy to get around, particularly if you have children of various ages. They are easy to fold, steer and carry up and down the stairs.
This City Mini GT2 features side-by-side seating with plenty of legroom. It also has adjustable reclining, large UPF 50+ canopy and peekaboo windows. It also has frames that can be expanded in width to accommodate an additional car seat or another passenger.
Side-by-Side
The majority of the lightweight double travel stroller pushchairs we test are side-byside models and are generally recommended for kids who can stand up without assistance, as these models aren't equipped with car seat integration. The Thule Urban Glide 2 Double, and Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double, are both excellent options. They come with an recline adjustments for both seats, a big canopy, and padded five-point safety harnesses. They are also simple to move around despite their bigger footprint. They are ideal for parents who worry about getting through doors.
The Cybex Duet pushchair is unique because it has a clever frame that can be expanded to accommodate another child seat. This makes it lighter than other pushchairs with side-by-side seating. It can be pushed through doors that are standard and is easy to maneuver on public transportation. It also doubles as an jogger which is perfect if you plan to use it in conjunction with an infant car seat or a baby carrier.
Another fantastic side-by-side light Double Pushchairs With Adjustable Handle is the UPPAbaby Vista v2 Double, that offers more customization with a modular frame. The clever design allows the conversion of a double or single buggy by adding two carrycots or child car seats. It can even accommodate twins. It's a fantastic and practical choice for families with growing children and the UPPAbaby makes one of the lightest and most stylish umbrella strollers around.
Try the egg2 which folds down to the size and weight of a compact suitcase. It can be used as a double or single by adding two baby car seats or carrycots. Our test subjects were awed by the ease of maneuver even with a load of children.
Double pushchairs with side-by-side seating aren't 100% foolproof, however- if your children are the same age or stage they may still fight over who is allowed to ride in which seat. If they're at different heights then it is possible that a tandem design is the best option for them, since it lets them face each other.
Tandem
While side-by-side models may be more appropriate for siblings who are the same age, tandem lightweight double pushchairs are a different kind of pushchair with their own appeal. Some can fit carseats that are larger, and others come with seats that can be reversible. Others have an additional carrycot or convertible seat in the middle. They are generally more spacious and easy to move into and out of the baskets, though they are typically smaller than those of single buggies. They often have larger canopy as well as peekaboo windows, and even padding for the leg cushions.
The iCandy Peach is another example of a great value lightweight tandem. Its fabric feels a bit less luxurious than our other top-rated tandems, however, it still looks and feels great and is very user-friendly. Its one-handed folding is impressive. While it requires some practice, Kirstie from our Lab called it "genius". The carrycot can't be folded while it's attached. However, the process to attach and remove the carrycot is quick and easy.
Tandem lightweight double pushchairs will generally make more precise turns than side-by-side models, however they are more difficult to drive on bumps and uneven surfaces. They can also be slower to accelerate and heavier to move. This puts strain on your back.
Another alternative is a convertible double buggy which is initially a single and then you can add adapters to make it into a double. It could have an additional seat, a carrycot, or both in front. Or the children can sit together. Some of them also offer the option to add a buggy board, which can aid an older child keep up with a younger sibling.
The Uppababy Vista V2 can be transformed into a twin-sized pushchair by purchasing additional cocoons at PS59 each. These cocoons create an area that is flat for newborns. They can be placed in a row or joined to face each other, and you can use them in conjunction with the infant car seat that is included with the pushchair twin (as as long as you select a compatible one). Since they are made of high-quality materials, these kinds of buggies that are dual-use can be used for years without showing much wear, indicating they have an excellent resale value.
Single-to-double pushchair with car seat
This compact double buggy is designed for families who love the outdoors and want to upgrade from a single-stroller. It can be converted into a jogger with the kit that comes with air-filled tires and all-wheel-suspension. It can also handle rough terrain well and it's a tandem triple that is suitable for twins or children of different ages. It's also a great choice for parents who are looking for an elegant design that's as sleek as a single and comes in a variety of fabric colours.
We loved the way that this iCandy model folds up using a single-hand mechanism that's very easy to master. It's heavier than other single-to-double pushchairs, but home tester Karolina says it's very mobile even with two toddlers inside and carrying a carrycot.
The seat can be used parent-facing, and you can also purchase additional accessories for this stroller, such as the Roma Gemini carrycots (PS100 each) that are perfect for babies. Our test panel found the seats to be comfortable for toddlers, with good lumbar support and headrests. There are plenty of options for reclining in the front, with the seat being adjustable to different positions and the rear seat having the option of recline.
This type of buggy has the greatest disadvantage of being wider than the side-by-side doubles. This makes it difficult to maneuver through doorways and it can be difficult to move between kerbs. However the suspension and wheels are generally able to do a good job of coping with paved surfaces and the fact that they're much lighter than some of the side-by-sides means you can still have plenty of storage space. It's important to keep in mind that strollers of this type aren't as adept at navigating narrow aisles in supermarkets and can struggle to cope with a lot of shopping. Although it's easier to turn the stroller on a narrow curved path, this can still be a problem. Some are easier to turn than other models, like the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double or the Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double.
Convertible
The great thing about convertible double pushchairs is that they are able to adapt to a family's changing needs. They often start out as single buggies, and include adapters to add the second seat, carrycot or (in some instances) an automobile seat to the frame. Some of them can be converted back to a single as your child grows older and begins to walk more or prefers to ride on buggy boards.
One of the lightest double strollers we have on our list, this sleek tri-fold model can hold children up to 40lbs each. It also has a handy basket in between the seats to store things. The spacious canopy with peekaboo window, multi-position reclining chairs and a front and back suspension for smoother riding on rough terrain were well-loved by home testers. It also has a convenient parent cup holder as well as a large, easily accessible basket. However, they noticed that the backs of the seats have tiny pockets that aren't large enough to hold more than a phone and keys.
This light, high-end side-byside is available in more than 20 different configurations. It also includes a second chair and carrycot. It has a high-profile steering handlebar, front and rear suspensions to smooth out rough terrain and a compact fold that can stand on its own with straps to make it easy to transport and seven-inch front wheels with swivel locks, and 10-inch back wheels that have suspensions to ensure a smoother ride. The only drawback is that you'll have to buy a separate baby carrier or car seat.
This multi-functional tandem is a popular choice among our home testers for its easy-to-maneuver size and impressively large shopping basket, which is accessible from both seats in the parent-facing position. Its surprisingly light weight (about the same as some single pushchairs) makes it easy to move around. Many have praised the clever way it attaches the second seat or riding board to the back. Parents also loved the fact that it can accommodate car seats and infant carriers from various brands. This includes some that are not normally compatible with other double buggies.
