They can also find them on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will display a preview of an item's next level of upgrade, when there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the item slot, and the current level of the item upgrader kit. For instance, weapons will cost more than gloves, bracers, or bracers. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a certain number of crests. Certain upgrades provide discounts on Flightstones. After an item has been upgraded to a certain level it can be re-downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower price.

Upgraders for items are available at many locations on the main island as well as some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and a chance to obtain the latest recipe. For instance, it's a good idea to make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the top equipment you have and save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan to make. This is particularly applicable to rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character, which will only be able to avail the discount for all accounts when all slots are full of high-quality equipment.
