It's an attitude
Pragmatic thinking is a way to solve problems that focuses on practical outcomes and their consequences. It puts practical results above feelings, beliefs and moral tenets. This approach, however, can result in ethical dilemmas when in contradiction with moral values or moral principles. It can also overlook the longer-term consequences of decisions.
Pragmatism is a philosophical approach that was developed in the United States around 1870. It is a growing alternative to continental and analytic philosophical traditions throughout the world. It was first articulated by pragmatic philosophers Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) and William James (1842-1910). They formulated the philosophy through a series papers and then promoted it through teaching and demonstrating. Their students included Josiah Royce (1855-1916) and John Dewey (1859-1952).
Early pragmatists were skeptical of the theories of justification that were based on the foundations, which held that empirical knowledge is founded on unquestioned, or "given," beliefs. Instead, pragmatists like Peirce and Rorty believed that theories are constantly under revision; that they are best considered as hypotheses in progress that require refining or rejection in context of future research or the experience.
A fundamental principle of pragmatics was that any theory could be clarified by examining its "practical implications" that is, the consequences of its experiences in specific situations. This method led to a distinct epistemological framework: a fallibilist and anti-Cartesian interpretation of the rules that govern inquiry. James and Dewey for instance, defended the pluralistic alethic view of truth.
Many pragmatists resigned themselves to the term when the Deweyan period waned and analytic philosophy flourished. Some pragmatists like Dorothy Parker Follett and George Herbert Mead continued to develop their philosophy. Some pragmatists focused on realism in its broadest sense regardless of whether it was a scientific realism based on the monism of truth (following Peirce) or a more broadly-based alethic pluralism (following James & Dewey).
Today, the pragmatic movement is growing worldwide. There are pragmatics from Europe, America and Asia who are interested in a variety of subjects, from Native American philosophy to environmental sustainability. The pragmatics also participate in meta-ethics, and have come up with a convincing argument for a brand new model of ethics.
