Origins
The company was founded in 1917 and its early years mirrored Japan's economic development. In the beginning, Toto manufactured products to meet the demands for modern, brand new urban housing. It used the first tunnel kilns in the country to continuously produce ceramics. It also pioneered the use of automation for production control, allowing greater efficiency and a more consistent production.
In the late 1980s the company began expanding overseas to profit from sales and new markets. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and distributing other manufacturers' products to complement its own lines of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy boosted sales and increased the company's global market share.
In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus on research and development for water-related household appliances. It also improved its system of distribution to better serve its customers and boost profits. The company implemented a just-in-time approach to managing its supply chain and used the same approach in its sales program. This resulted in a higher level of satisfaction of customers.
Toto continued to develop toilet technology. Its latest toilet, for example it has an extremely powerful tornado flush that is more eco friendly than conventional toilets. Discography
With a name as evocative as Asia one would expect the group to be prog kings and queens - but it's actually a pretty straight forward rock group. The group began as a quartet, and they recorded two albums - 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a diverse musical background their biggest hit was in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a huge blockbuster, but not without its share of issues. Toto was able to achieve this through the aid of the hit song "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experience. Before forming the group, the members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for '80s pop, and has influenced many contemporary artists.
This album starts off hard with songs like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into your. The album also includes some more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album ends with Great Expectations. This song mixes folk and the distorted AOR, which should appear completely unnatural, but actually is very effective.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes changed for the worse. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band went through various drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. The group managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an attempt to return to the classic sextet structure and a more consistent, stronger effort with a harder edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate and less cloying than previously recorded recordings.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded their Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album just a few months after, and went on a world tour to promote the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album called Then and 안전놀이터 Now. It was the band's first album that did not contain one single track titled "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
