Then, we compared the choices with their linguistic performance on the DCTs to determine if they were a sign of pragmatic resistance. The results of the MQs, DCTs and z-tests were analysed using descriptive statistics and z tests. The CLKs were found to employ euphemistic phrases such as "sorry" or "thank you". They were asked to complete the DCTs in their first language and complete the MQs in either their L1 or their L2. The results showed that CLKs on average, did not adhere to the patterns of native speakers in more than 40 percent of their responses. They did this even though they could create patterns that resembled native ones. In addition, they were conscious of their own pragmatism. They attributed their choices to learner-internal factors such as their personalities and multilingual identities as well as ongoing life histories. The interviewees expressed their concern about the social pressures or penalties they could be subject to when their social norms were violated. These findings suggest that native-speaker pragmatic norms are not the preferred choice of Korean learners. They could remain useful as a model for official Korean proficiency tests. But it would be prudent for future researchers to reassess their relevance in specific scenarios and in different cultural contexts.
