Costs
Upgrades are accompanied by some associated costs. The first is the cost of performing the upgrade. It can be costly and is contingent on the new value of the item and the number of perks it receives. Upgrades to higher levels (such as Explorer to Champion or Veteran to Heroic) can be costly.
The other is the cost of the materials required for an upgrade. The items used are typically either Power Dices (dropped by monsters 21and up) or Minerals and Erons (obtainable by completing specific Mists of Pandaria or Warlords of Draenor quests). These materials can be found in the inventory of an Upgrade Vendor.
It takes time to upgrade an item. Based on the magnitude of the upgrade, it can take anywhere from 8 to 12 hours. The upgraded item's base stats are calculated using the new ilvl of the item, perks, and other properties. This calculation determines the new Armor Class bonus, damage dice, and other important stats. In some instances, an upgrade can grant additional benefits. These perks are offered in a list.
Rarely, the perks gained will cost more than one perk slot to acquire; in these situations, the upgrade will only replace the perks with the highest cost. The upgrader can also make other modifications to the item, such as changing the damage type of its weapon, or adding or eliminating an operational or unwieldy feature. These modifications are based on an item upgrader kit's ilvl. They may also require special materials, such as adamantine.
