Path of Exile item upgrades (look at here now)

Item upgrades are a common and essential way to boost the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can also provide additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Sometimes, however upgraded Common and Magic gear is outclassed by Rare-grade gear because of their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They boost the effectiveness of the item they are connected to. Upgrades to armor can be found in the world of games and purchased from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Additionally, they can be rescued from items with upgrade components within them by with a professional or higher salvage kit.

The amount of damage that an armored piece or weapon can absorb depends on the extent of its upgrades. The damage absorption of an armor piece will increase when it's upgraded to the maximum upgrade level. However, it's important to note that this will also increase its weight, causing it to weigh more than before.

There are a variety of armor upgrades that are available in the game. Each has a different effect. Some upgrades give armor an extra number of health points, while others make it more powerful and lighter. The name of the armor upgrade will indicate the kind of upgrade that an item upgrader kit will be given, as illustrated below.

Some of the upgrades also require magic or a combination of technology and magic, which is identified by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. Additionally, some upgrades require charges to use, which is shown by an "Charges" entry in the table below. The charges associated with these upgrades are updated daily or never expire dependent on the upgrade.

Iron Ore is the cheapest method to upgrade items your armor. You can locate it by exploring and looting small treasure chests. Titanium is more costly, however, it is available at the smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Some upgrades, like the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied on armor pieces that are of high-level. These upgrades can provide significant boost to stats and are worth the cost, especially for single-handed weapons.

Upgrading a piece of armor to the highest upgrade level will greatly increase its defense values, but the player should be aware that putting more weight on it will drastically reduce its agility and speed. For this reason, it is generally not recommended to upgrade the majority of armor pieces above +9, since the defensive boost gained is usually not worth the additional weight and power cost of the upgrades required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to increase the effectiveness of specific aspects of the weapon. For example an upgrade could increase the damage dealt by shotgun shells or the accuracy of a rifle sniper. Certain firearms have upgrades that enhance their inherent capabilities. Frictionless materials (improves stability, and reduces weapon overheating), and Kinetic coils (increases the projectile's acceleration to cause more damage) are two examples.

The majority of upgrades for weapons require a whetblade, one of three Power Dices and a different amount Minerals and Erons. They can be gained by completing Side Quests or by killing a certain amount of monsters and bosses.

Upgrading a Weapon, Equipment Set piece, or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade price of a certain number of Bars. The higher the upgrade level, the higher the number of bars you will need to complete the upgrade. The cost of the upgrades will be lower if have more than one of the relevant upgrade materials.

In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade your weapon and sets has changed a bit. Prior to Chapter 2 Season 5, you could upgrade your weapon and equipment by paying a specific amount of Bars. You could do this until your weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level and at that point, the upgrades would be reset.

This is still possible, but it depends heavily on RNG. Instead, you're better off going to stores and purchasing equipment with low upgrade levels, but good base scores and stat distributions. These gears have a greater likelihood of granting you highest level of benefits and blessings.

Most players will want to prioritize upgrades to the weapons they most often use to help them level up quicker. Additionally players, they should also consider upgrading the weapons that are most popular with their teammates to make them more powerful as well. Shepard, for example should upgrade his M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R. This will increase the effectiveness of the weapon when used in conjunction with biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels are placed in the armor's sockets and weapons, increasing the power of a character and bringing about secondary effects. They can be created using an process known as jewelry crafting, in which you combine a gem and several chemicals at a table. The higher the level of the jewel the better the secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses in the world, or by finding Legendary Gear. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The Jeweler can improve the quality of a gem in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. The stat boosts can vary depending on the level the jewel is at when it is inserted into jewelry, weapons, or gear.

All levels of jewels can be crafted at the Jeweler and Jeweler's Workshop, with the exception of the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a certain level to be able to get them. In contrast to other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped with a identical jewel without destroying it. However it is only possible to replace one jewel in a piece of equipment once.

It is normal to use more gems to enhance the appearance of. In addition to improving performance, the jewels create a surface that is harder than metal, so repeated friction from pivots won't cause damage as easily.

A Glyphmaster can offer glyphs to improve the look of your shields and weapons. These glyphs offer a small boost and can be exchanged, however they're not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold, and also scattered Crystal. Glyphs may also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components such as aegis or traits cannot be exchanged and can only be found with an Upgrade extractor or salvaging with Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage.

Trinkets

Trinkets are a great way to provide your hero with a variety of small, but beneficial, advantages. You can find them in the starting area as rewards for personal stories or loot. They can also be obtained through vendors and after doing road interaction. They can also be made by jewelers, and found or purchased at the Trading Post.

The first trinket a player is able to unlock is the cloak, which gives a small, but valuable boost to movement speed and evasion. The player can then acquire necklaces, rings, and amulets, in a similar way similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade slot that can accept either a universal or jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and are able to be used on any piece of equipment. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced, and can only be used with certain trinkets.

These trinkets also grant additional buffs and skills that remain active even when the character is not in combat. This allows a hero to be more efficient when they are not active. It can also make up for the lack of a excellent slot in the talent tree or team which are usually filled by a hero's top stats.

In general trinket upgrades should be a priority BiS (Best in Slot) items you won't replace in the near future. Also, consider items that have desirable statistics aren't as important as the iLevel of the item to be upgraded. This is particularly true if an item level upgrade has multiple stats that you wish to upgrade, as it's often more beneficial to upgrade one important stat than two sub-optimal ones.

Jungle players will often upgrade their yellow trinkets to a red one prior to the beginning of the game. Top and mid players, on the other hand they will select a green or a pink ward, depending on the matchup. These choices will have an impact on the ability of a hero to control the map.

In addition to the items mentioned above, players will find other trinkets that form of rewards and trophies throughout the game. These can be earned by completing certain milestones within the story, for instance finishing a chapter's main quest or killing a certain boss. You can see them by selecting the achievement in the reward section of the hero's menu.
