The ability to upgrade items allows players to enhance their weapons and gear by adding new affixes that boost its base stats or adding additional perks. To upgrade an item level upgrade, the player needs to have it in their inventory, as well as access to the kiln.

Items with weak bases, like rings can be upgraded to stronger bases. Items with bases that are strong, such as Titans from eth, have no changes in their stats.

Upgrade components

Suffix upgrades, which can be placed in gathering tools, add their name to the end of the name of the item they are connected to, for example adding the word Glyph to a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would make it a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.

In the case of upgrades to gather tools when a player swaps one glyph with a different one the previous glyph will be returned to the inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component with a glyph, it will be destroyed, with the exception for inscriptions, which are able to be swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important differences from earlier versions. Gear is now categorised in tracks and each item can only be upgraded so many times before it is "leveled out." The cost for upgrades increases with each level up, but the required materials aren't as high. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a couple of important items to maximize their impact instead of spreading cost of upgrades across several items.
