Upgrades to items are an essential part of gearing up your character. Upgrades boost the base damage and enchantments of items.

They also provide bonuses and enhancements. They can be purchased by contacting the Blacksmith.

The upgrade button is available on any item. Every best item upgrade recycled adds a level to the gauge for upgrading.

Weapons

When a weapon gets upgraded, it gets a base damage bonus, as well as a scaling factor which affects other stats. Once the weapon is at maximum upgrade, it can be reforged with a number of different upgrade types to improve certain stats or add bonuses and effects. All of these upgrades can be applied at once and their effects will differ based on how rare the weapon is.

Two Blacksmiths are able to perform these upgrades in the game: Blacksmith Iji on the Road to the Manor Site of Grace and Smithing Master Hewg at the Church of Elleh hub. Both upgrade materials differ: Smithing Stones to modify the damage a weapon deals and Somber Smithing Stones to modify standard weapons.

In general, it is recommended to increase the damage of your weapon first, then armour defense, and then the other secondary stats that are required by your build. In particular, it's common to see melee druids upgrading their weapon before they upgrade any other gear, as this helps maximise DPS. This is particularly true for enchantments, which are extremely effective in boosting the damage of a weapon and other stats.

Armor

Item Upgrades let players increase the stats base of specific pieces of armor, weapons, trinkets and gathering tools. They can also provide additional effects such as increased damage or cosmetic enhancements. Item Upgrades can be obtained through crafting, buying from NPC vendors, through loot drops or as rewards for quests.

The armor can be upgraded by visiting the Armorer NPC and spending appropriate currencies. Most armor upgrades to the next level following an upgrade. This is possible for all types of armor, however certain items are not upgradeable at all (such as the starter armor in Great Sky Island).

Skull Cavern is where you will find Trinkets after completing the Mastery Cave. You will find them when you defeat Monsters and in chests and crates. They aren't found in the Mines or Volcano Dungeon.

If you have a trinket that requires upgrading then place it in the Anvil to upgrade it. This will have a random effect on the trinket, either extending its lifespan or enhancing its effects. You can reorge an item as many times as you want, though it will always have an effect that is different from the one you had when you forged it.

You can also upgrade your Trinkets by placing them in a Magical Catalyst at the Alchemy Station. This will cost 6 energy, but will increase the trinkets power by a small amount.
