Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean
In addition to learner-internal influences, CLKs' awareness of the need to be pragmatic and the social ties they had access to were significant. This article examines all local pragmatic research on Korean published up to 2020. It focuses on key pragmatic topics including:
Discourse Construction Tests (DCTs)
The discourse completion test is a popular tool in pragmatic research. It has many advantages but it also has some drawbacks. For example, the DCT is unable to account for the cultural and individual differences in communicative behavior. Furthermore, the DCT is susceptible to bias and could cause overgeneralizations. Therefore, it must be carefully analyzed prior to using it for research or for assessment purposes.
Despite its limitations, the DCT can be a useful tool to study the relationship between prosody and information structure in non-native speakers. Its ability to use two or more stages to alter the social variables that are related to politeness can be a strength. This can assist researchers understand the role of prosody in communicating across cultural contexts, 프라그마틱 카지노 a major challenge in cross-cultural pragmatics.
In the field of linguistics the DCT has become one of the primary tools to analyze learners' behavior in communication. It can be used to examine various aspects that include politeness, turn taking, and lexical selection. It can also be used to determine the phonological complexity of the learners their speech.
A recent study utilized a DCT to assess EFL students' refusal skills. Participants were given various scenarios and asked to choose the appropriate response from the options offered. The researchers discovered that the DCT to be more effective than other refusal methods, such as the use of a questionnaire or video recordings. DCTs can be developed using specific requirements for linguistics, such as form and content. These criteria are intuitive and based on the assumptions of test creators. This issue requires further research on different methods of assessing refusal ability.
A recent study examined DCT responses to requests made by students via email versus the responses gathered from an oral DCT. The results showed that the DCT encouraged more direct and conventionally form-based requests and a lower use of hints than email data did.
Metapragmatic Questionnaires (MQs)
This study investigated Chinese learners' pragmatic choices when using Korean. It used various experimental tools such as Discourse Completion Tasks, metapragmatic questions, and Refusal Interviews. Participants were 46 CLKs at the upper-intermediate level who responded to MQs, DCTs, and RIs. They were also asked to consider their evaluations and refusal performance in RIs. The results revealed that CLKs frequently chose to resist native Korean pragmatic norms, and that their choices were influenced by four main factors: their identities, their multilingual identities, their ongoing lives, and their relational benefits. These findings have pedagogical implications for L2 Korean assessment.
The MQ data was first analyzed to determine the participants' practical choices. The data were categorized according to Ishihara's (2010) definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, the selections were matched with their linguistic performance on the DCTs to determine if they showed a pattern of resistance to pragmatics or not. The interviewees were asked to justify their decision to use pragmatic language in a given situation.
The results of the MQs, 프라그마틱 순위 DCTs and z-tests were analysed using descriptive statistics and z tests. It was discovered that the CLKs frequently used euphemistic responses such as "sorry" and "thank you." This was likely due to their lack of familiarity with the target language, which led to an insufficient understanding of korea pragmatic norms. The results showed that CLKs' preferences for either converging to L1 norms or dissociating from both L1 and L2 pragmatic norms varies according to the DCT situations. The RIs also revealed the CLKs were aware of their own pragmatism in each DCT situation. RIs were conducted on a one-to-one basis within a period of two days of participants having completed the MQs. The RIs were recorded and transcribing, and then coded by two coders who were independent. The code was re-coded repeatedly, with the coders re-reading and discussing each transcript. The results of the coding process are evaluated against the original RI transcripts to determine whether they captured the underlying pragmatic behavior.
Refusal Interviews (RIs)
The central question in pragmatic research is: Why do some learners choose not to accept native-speaker norms? Recent research sought to answer this question using several experimental tools including DCTs MQs and RIs. Participants included 46 CLKs and 44 CNSs from five Korean Universities. The participants were asked to complete the DCTs and MQs in their L1 or their L2. They were then invited to an RI, where they were required to reflect on and discuss their responses to each DCT scenario.
The results showed that on average, the CLKs rejected native-speaker pragmatic norms in more than 40% of their answers. They did this even though they could create patterns that resembled native ones. They were also conscious of their own pragmatism. They attributed their decisions to learner-internal factors like their identities, personalities, multilingual identities, and ongoing lives. They also referred to external factors, like relational affordances. For example, they described how their relationships with professors led to more relaxed performance with respect to the intercultural and linguistic norms of their university.
However, the interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures and consequences that they could face if they flouted the local social norms. They were worried that their native friends would consider them "foreigners" and think they are unintelligent. This was a concern similar to the concerns voiced by Brown (2013) and 프라그마틱 슬롯 무료 Ishihara (2009).
These results suggest that native-speaker practical norms are not the norm for Korean learners. They could still be useful as a model for official Korean proficiency tests. Future researchers should reassess the validity of these tests in different cultural contexts and in specific situations. This will help them better understand the effect of different cultural contexts on the classroom behavior and interactions of students from L2. Moreover it will assist educators to create more effective methods for teaching and testing korea pragmatics. Case Studies
The case study method is a method that focuses on intensive, participant-centered research to investigate a specific topic. They were questioned about their WTC/SPCC, pragmatic awareness and understanding and their perception of the world.
The interviewees were given two scenarios, each of which involved an imaginary interaction with their interactants and asked to choose one of the following strategies to use when making a request. Interviewees were then asked to justify their decision. The majority of participants attributed their lack of a pragmatic response to their personalities.
