Each item has a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a specific amount.

Item Level

When an item gets upgraded, its basic stats increase in value. This value is the total of all the leveled up advantages (attack magic attack, attack defense). The cost of upgrading items can be high depending on the upgrader and what type of upgrade you choose to do. This is due to the number of perks that need to be modified to upgrade an item.

The level of an item is a popular measure of power, and is visible on all tooltips of items. It is also used to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear as PvP is restricted at a lower level. The average level of an item is listed on the character sheet.

When deciding whether to purchase or sell gear players can look at the item level. It's a sign of the item's damage and quality. Comparing items from the inventory of a seller can be done by using the level of the item.

The item level can be checked by pressing the ALT key on your PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the full item description, including its value. It can also be found by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are several theories on how the calculation of the item's level is made. One theory says that the item level is calculated by an equation that determines the worth of the stats of an item really are. It considers the fact that various perks have different value, and also that sockets have gems that increase the overall value of the item. This process could result in a calculated value for the item's level, which is usually quite close to Blizzard's real item level.

However, this isn't the only factor that can affect an item's ilvl because the level of the area the item is dropped into can alter the value of its stats, for instance by adding an amount to its haste or crit rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have more the ilvl than items from lower level instances.

Item Stats

Stats on an item are a significant element in what makes or breaks an item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in various ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the most effective." The stat mods of weapons boost base stats. These stat mods are then enhanced by a player's level.

The upgrades to an item can increase the stats of an item. The rarity of an item determines its upgrade cost. An item that is white or grey for instance, can only be upgraded one time however, items with rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times at higher costs.

Another method to alter the stats on an item is through affixes. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. The affixes can provide the item extra damage, or add a unique ability to the item (such as reviving dead or reducing the duration of cooldowns) or make the item unique by giving an additional name to the item.

All affixes can be currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button. This will cost a certain amount in gold and other items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges as with other rerolling methods.

Players can upgrade an item with specific stats, or reroll attaches. The possible stat ranges for an item are determined by the level of the item, but every item is guaranteed to have at minimum one stat within that range, unless it is a unique item or an item that is a God roll from a boss of a raid.

Another thing that could be changed is the option to upgrade equipment without having to reroll attaches, or select which stats to enhance. But as with base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item basis, and the interface for item comparison wouldn't show all possible stats that were gained or lost at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the odds of finding items, the properties spawned on loot drops and the intensity of the properties. However, it doesn't directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players a possibility to obtain better equipment earlier in the game, and is therefore more useful in early game runs than in later ones, as most players prioritize higher weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the probability of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade items chance which increases with each level of the item and can be further enhanced through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, shields, and armor can be created or spawned using the Luck property, with an initial value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to grant a further +40 Luck, or to increase the luck of an item up to 140.

Certain items, like the weapon with Hollow-infused components, can also be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any ability that causes damage by 5percent. These items can be bought from the shop or made using the correct ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chance of success of an upgrade or to stop players from losing their items if it is not successful.

The rate of success of an upgrade is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of completing the upgrade successfully and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The probability of success can only be increased by so much, and the chance that an upgrade item will fail can't exceed 100%..

The luck of an item can affect the success of an upgrade. All items have an average success rate of 25 percent, and each item that has Luck increases this chance by 5%.

The item upgrade overlays are rendered above items in the inventory. This may cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
