Upgrades to items are a method to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade you choose, it may increase the rarity of an item or mark Level and increase other stats.

Item Level

When an item gets upgraded, its base stats improve in value. The value is the sum of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrading items can be expensive dependent on the upgrader and the type of upgrade you choose to make. This is due to how many perks have to be replaced in order for the item to get upgraded.

Item level is a widely used measure of power, and is visible on all item tooltips. It also serves as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is restricted to a lower level). Players can view their average item level in their character sheet.

When deciding to purchase or sell gear players can look at the levels of the item. It's an indicator of the damage and quality. Comparing items from a vendor's stock is possible using the item level.

On PC, you are able to see the level of the item using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the complete description of the item, as well as its value. It can also be located by hovering an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are a few theories about how the item level calculation is made. One theory is that the level is a numerical value derived from a formula that calculates the amount an item's stats are worth. It considers the fact that various perks have different value and that gems in sockets add to the overall value of the item upgrader mod. Similar to base equipment, it would have to be done per item and the interface for item comparison would not display all the possible stats simultaneously.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player increases the chance of finding items as well as the properties generated by loot, and the intensity of these properties. This is particularly advantageous in the early game, because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their items if it fails.

The success rate of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. The Luck of an item may affect the effectiveness of an upgrade. Each item has an average success rate of 25 percent, and each item that has Luck increases this chance by 5%.

It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the inventory items, so enchantment glint and other effects may be obstructed by them.
