Upgrades to an item are a way to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade it could raise an item's Mark level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.

The process of upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests Each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a specific amount.

Item Level

When an item gets upgraded, its base stats are increased in value. The value is the sum of all of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrading items can be expensive, depending on the upgrader and the kind of upgrade you decide to do. This is due to the number of perks that must be modified to upgrade an item.

The level of an item is a commonly used measure of power, and is visible on all item tooltips. It also serves to determine a gating condition when waiting for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is limited to an lower level). Players can see their average level of item on their character sheet.

Using the item level will allow players to compare the power of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's a sign of the damage and its quality. The item level can also be used to compare items when evaluating a vendor's inventory.

The item level can be checked by pressing the ALT key on your PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the full description of the item, as well as its value. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are various theories on how the item level calculation is done. One theory suggests that the level of an item is calculated using an equation that determines the value of an item's stats really are. It considers the fact that various perks have different value, and also that gems in sockets increase the overall value of the item. This could result in a calculated item's ilvl that is typically very close to Blizzard's real item level.

However, this isn't the only factor that determines the ilvl of an item, because the level of the area the item dropped in can change the value of its stats, such as by adding a level to its haste or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level situations will have a higher ilvl.

Item Stats

The stats of an item can determine the fate of an item for players. The game uses a lot of them in different ways to encourage players to use multiple weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being "the best." The base stats of a weapon are increased by the weapon's stat mods which are then increased by the player's skill.

The upgrades to an item can increase its stats. The cost of upgrades is determined by the rarity of the item. A grey or white item for instance, will only be upgraded one time however, items that has rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times at higher prices.

Another way to change the stats of an item is by affixing it. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player, and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The affixes could provide the item additional damage, or add a unique capability to the item (such as reviving dead or decreasing the duration of cooldowns), or make the item unique by giving a special name to the item.

Currently, all affixes can be modified by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button using circles arrows. This will cost a specific amount in gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges, similar to other rerolling methods.

Players can choose to upgrade an item with specific stats, or reroll attaches. The possible ranges of stats for an item are determined by the level of the item, but all items are guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the range, unless it's an exclusive item or the result of a God roll from a boss of a raid.

Another thing that could change is the option to upgrade equipment without having to roll the affixes, or choose which stats to boost. Similar to base equipment, it would have to be done per item, and the interface for item upgrader comparison would not display all the possible stats simultaneously.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player can increase the chance of finding items, the properties that are generated by loot, and the intensity of these properties. However, it doesn't directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It merely gives players the chance to upgrade their gear in earlier waves and is therefore more useful in early game runs than later ones because most players value greater weapon scaling and defense over raw damage gains.

Luck can also boost the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chances of upgrading, which increase with each level of the item. It is also possible to be enhanced by using anti-materials like a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor, and weapons have the default Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the material of the item upgrading) to grant a further +40 Luck, or to increase the Luck of an item, up to 140.

Certain items, like the weapon that is infused with hollow, can also be equipped to increase the damage of any ability that deals damage by 5percent. These items can be purchased in the shop or made using the correct ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chance of success of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their items if it is not successful.

The success rate of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading that item and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The probability of success can only be increased by so much, and the likelihood that an upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%..

The performance of an upgrades is also influenced by the luck of that item. Each item has an initial success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by an additional 5percent.

Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the items in the inventory therefore enchantment glints and other effects may be obscured by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
