Mockingbird
The mockingbird is a multi-faceted songbird with the ability to mimic other birds and sounds. The bird mimics car alarms and can produce a wide range of sounds. However, certain species of mockingbirds are endangered. The northern mockingbird, Mimus polyglottos, is a common bird in many suburbs. It is one of the most widespread songbirds of North America and can be found all over the United States. The bird is also a fiercely territorial and protective animal. It attacks intruders, including hawks and house pets even if they are larger than the mockingbird itself.
The Mockingbird is a plain-looking bird that weighs less than two ounces. Its length measures between nine and eleven inches long, which includes its tail. Males and females are alike in appearance, although males have a slightly larger head. Mockingbirds are monogamous, and typically mate for life. They construct their nests, often using nests that are partially constructed from previous years, and raise two to four broods a year, each beginning with an average of four eggs. The mockingbird is skilled in mimicry, and can mimic the songs of other animals, including owls, catbirds, and thrashers.
In the past, people gathered mockingbirds for pets, and their number fell drastically during the 19th century. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1919 safeguarded the bird from being held in captivity and egg collection but other human-caused threats persist. For example the northern mockingbird is vulnerable to collisions with structures and to poisoning by pesticides. The Floreana and Espanola mockingbirds are both critically endangered. They have a narrow range, and a small population. The Mockingbird is a cherished symbol of southern culture and is featured in folklore, art, stories, and even in literature. It is the official bird of Florida, Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. Harper Lee's popular novel To Kill a Mockingbird also included the bird. The novel is about race and loss innocence.
