Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean
In addition to the learner-internal aspects, CLKs' awareness of pragmatic resistance and the relationship advantages they were able to draw from were important. For instance, RIs from TS and ZL both cited their local professor relationships as a significant reason for them to choose to not criticize the strictness of a professor (see example 2).
This article reviews all locally published pragmatic research on Korean up to 2020. It focuses on practical fundamental topics like:
Discourse Construction Tests
The test for discourse completion is a commonly used tool in the field of pragmatic research. It has many strengths, but it also has some disadvantages. The DCT for instance, 프라그마틱 does not take into account individual and cultural variations. The DCT can also be biased and result in overgeneralizations. Therefore, it should be analyzed carefully before using it for research or for assessment purposes.
Despite its limitations, the DCT can be a valuable tool for investigating the relationship between prosody and information structure in non-native speakers. The ability to manipulate social variables that affect the manner of speaking in two or more steps could be a plus. This characteristic can be utilized to study the effect of prosody across cultural contexts.
In the field of linguistics, DCT is one of the most effective tools to analyze the communication habits of learners. It can be used to study many issues, such as the manner of speaking, turn-taking and the choices made in lexical use. It can be used to evaluate the phonological complexity of the learners their speech.
Recent research has used the DCT as tool to evaluate the skills of refusal among EFL students. Participants were presented with a list of scenarios and were asked to choose the appropriate response from the choices provided. The authors discovered that the DCT to be more effective than other refusal methods, such as the use of a questionnaire or video recordings. However, the researchers cautioned that the DCT should be used with caution and should include other data collection methods.

This issue requires further research on different methods of assessing refusal ability.
In a recent study, DCT responses to student inquiries via email were compared with those from an oral DCT. The results showed that DCTs favored more direct and conventionally indirect requests and utilized more hints than email data.
Metapragmatic Questionnaires (MQs)
This study examined Chinese learners' choices in their use of Korean through a variety of tools that were tested, including Discourse Completion Tasks (DCTs) Metapragmatic Questionnaires, Refusal Interviews (RIs). Participants were 46 CLKs with upper-intermediate ability who provided responses to MQs and DCTs. They were also asked for reflections on their evaluations and refusals in RIs. The results showed that CLKs often chose to reject native Korean pragmatic norms. Their decisions were influenced by four factors: their personalities and multilingual identities, their ongoing life experiences, as well as their relational affordances. These findings have implications for L2 Korean assessment and teaching.
The MQ data was first analyzed to identify the participants' actual choices. The data was categorized according Ishihara (2010)'s definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, we compared the selections with their linguistic performance on the DCTs in order to determine if they were a sign of resistance to pragmatics. Interviewees also had to explain the reasons for choosing the pragmatic approach in certain situations.
The results of the MQs and DCTs were then analysed using descriptive statistics and z-tests. It was found that the CLKs often resorted to the use of euphemistic phrases such as "sorry" and "thank you." This could be due to their lack of familiarity with the target language which led to an insufficient knowledge of korea pragmatic norms. The results revealed that CLKs' preferences for converging to L1 norms or departing from both L1 as well as L2 pragmatic norms varies according to the DCT situations. In Situations 3 and 12 CLKs preferred diverging from both L1pragmatic norms - and L2-pragmatic norms while in Situation 14, CLKs preferred convergence to L1 norms.
The RIs also revealed that the CLKs were aware of their pragmatic resistance in each DCT situation. The RIs were conducted in a one-to-one manner within two days after the participants had completed the MQs. The RIs were recorded and transcribed by two coders independent of each other, were then coded. Coding was an iterative process in which the coders discussed and read each transcript. The coding results are then contrasted with the original RI transcripts to determine how well they reflected the actual behavior.
Refusal Interviews (RIs)
The key problem in the field of pragmatic research is: Why do some learners choose not to accept native-speaker norms? Recent research attempted to answer this question by using several experimental tools including DCTs MQs and RIs. Participants comprised 46 CLKs and 44 CNSs from five Korean Universities. Participants were required to complete the DCTs and 슬롯 MQs either in their L1 or L2. They were then invited to an RI, where they were required to think about and discuss their responses to each DCT situation.
The results showed that, on average, the CLKs resisted the pragmatic norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their answers. They did this even though they could create patterns that resembled native ones. Furthermore, they were clearly conscious of their own pragmatism. They attributed their decision to learner-internal variables such as their personality and multilingual identities. They also mentioned external factors, like relational benefits. They outlined, for 프라그마틱 데모 instance, how their interactions with their professors helped them to function more easily in terms of the cultural and linguistic norms at their university.
However, the interviewees also expressed concern about the social pressures and penalties that they could be subjected to if they strayed from their social norms. They were worried that their native friends might perceive them as "foreignersand consider them unintelligent. This concern was similar to the concerns expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).
These results suggest that native speakers' pragmatic norms are not the preferred norm for Korean learners. They may remain useful as a model for official Korean proficiency tests. Future researchers should reassess the validity of these tests in different cultural contexts and specific situations. This will enable them to better know how different cultures can affect the pragmatic behavior of students in the classroom and beyond. Case Studies
The case study method is a research method that focuses on intensive, participant-centered research to investigate a specific topic. This method utilizes multiple data sources like interviews, observations, and documents, to support its findings. This kind of research is useful for examining specific or complex subjects that are difficult to quantify with other methods.
The first step in a case study is to define the subject matter and the purpose of the study. This will help determine what aspects of the subject are important to study and which could be left out. It is also beneficial to read the literature on to the subject to gain a broad understanding of the topic and to place the case study in a broader theoretical context.
This study was based on an open-source platform, the KMMLU Leaderboard [50], as well as its Korean-specific benchmarks HyperCLOVA X and LDCC Solar (figure 1 below). The results of this study revealed that L2 Korean learners were highly vulnerable to the influence of native models. They were more likely to choose incorrect answers that were literal interpretations of the prompts, deviating from the correct pragmatic inference. They also showed an unnatural tendency to add their own text, or "garbage," to their responses, which further hampered the quality of their responses.
The participants in this study were all L2 Korean students who had reached level four on the Test of Proficiency in Korean TOPIK in their second or third university year and were aiming to reach level six by their next attempt. They were asked questions about their WTC/SPCC, their pragmatic awareness and understanding and their knowledge of the world.
The interviewees were given two scenarios, each of which involved a hypothetical interaction with their interlocutors and were asked to select one of the following strategies when making an inquiry. The interviewees were asked to justify their choice. Most of the participants attributed their rational opposition to their personalities. For instance, TS claimed that she was hard to get close to, and therefore refused to ask about the health of her interlocutors despite having a heavy workload, even though she believed that native Koreans would do this.
