The ability to upgrade items allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear with new affixes, increasing the base stats of the item or giving additional benefits. To upgrade an item, the player has to have it in their inventory, as well as access to the kiln.

If the player upgrades their gathering tool, and replaces glyphs with another glyph, the old one will be returned to their inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, except for the inscriptions that can be swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant variations from the previous versions. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can be upgraded a certain number of times before they are "leveled out." The cost for upgrades increases with each level up however, the materials needed don't increase as much. The process can take as long as two hours and costs the same amount of material but will result in a lower chance of success.

Engineers may utilize a level to compare the height of the building against an established location, such as a benchmark. This method is known as a "level-loop." It involves taking readings with the level, backsighting rod, and then turning the level to take the foresighting rod reading. This method ensures that buildings are constructed to a high standard of accuracy and safety.

Rerolling

Rerolling is the process of changing the upgrade components of an item.
