Lolita's Personality

Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. They are the perfect addition to families with a variety of members. They are prone to becoming bored and find different ways to entertain themselves if their owners do not interact with them enough. Macaws who aren't properly socialized can become aggressive, and can even bite. It is crucial to have clear boundaries set so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that enjoy playing, interacting, and climb. They must spend at least 2 to 3 hours every day outside to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They love playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They enjoy visiting parks and playgrounds as well as hiking, local eateries and bars. Apart from being a great pet, they also make wonderful companions for children.

These birds can be very loud, despite their love for their mate. They can also be a nuisance for those living nearby. They can be heard making loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be disruptive in condominiums and apartments, or near young children who might be startled by their roar.

The species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. Because of this, DNA testing is the only method of determining sex. Once the bird's sex is determined and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases and tricks. This can be a long process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and recognize that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and aid in resolving any behavior issues.

Lolita's Care

For a long time activists have been calling for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to go back to the ocean.

Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They are a danger to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, pledged to develop a plan with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to eventually open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast where she could live for the remainder of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry, who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

This bird is also social and easily bonds with her family members. Macaws of gold and blue often make loud vocalizations which include "flock calls," which is part of their normal behavior. They might even play a game of squabbling and chewing at times, especially when they are annoyed or bored. It is crucial for potential pet owners to remember that this kind of behavior is normal and should be expected.

Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on the condition of Lolita and her health, but there are still questions. Certain experts, like Akromas who was the one who trained or supervised the care of Lolita at some point, have raised concerns about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she is eating 115 pounds of salmon, herring, capelin, and squid daily.

The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they feed their killer whales, particularly Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is threatened in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that some say is too small for her.

Lolita's Health

While her beauty is unquestionable Lolita's health continues decline. She has been a source of concern for animal welfare organizations who would like to see her released to the wild. Lolita has been a resident at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and has been an attraction for tourists for many years. She has battled chronic illnesses and an infection that has left in a fragile state.

The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information about Lolita's condition. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has posted monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is aging quickly and her health is declining.

It is unclear what specific health issues are plaguing the orca, since her captor isn't required to divulge the information. However, a database of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the deaths of orcas in captivity.

Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita, many people why are the glaceous macaw and hyancith macaw so alike hopeful that she may be closer than ever before to living a wild life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has stated his commitment to move the whale out of her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean, and possibly even meet the orca thought to be her mother. These plans were too late to save the beloved whale that died on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney problem.
