How to Replace an audi a1 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies to trigger the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It is a little tricky to test as there are various pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. If you are having problems with this part, Audi Advanced Key (Dunlap-Thestrup.Mdwrite.Net) check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.
I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. But i am afraid I might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know both the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.
The signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is going bad and should be replaced. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially in the case of a Bosch sensor like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a good option.
5. Tachometer
A failing engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your car. It's a vital component of the replacement audi car key's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is rotating. If this sensor fails, it can affect the performance of the transmission and the rest of the car's components.
The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU uses this signal to regulate the amount of fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those two pins.
