Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric stats on weapons, armor and rings. Upgrades can also boost bonuses like Crit chance and PvE Damage.

Components

Upgrade components can be inserted into any equipment that has a slot to accommodate them; the item must be at the very least upgraded to blue level to allow a component to be inserted. Infusions and enrichments are a special type of upgrade component that is designed for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment as well as the back items that are not ascending.
